5 Things That Always Get Lost When Moving
It is rarely the furniture that goes missing. It is the hardware, remote or cable that makes the furniture work. Keep these five items together.
Keys, remotes, furniture fixings, chargers and important paperwork are easy to misplace when moving house. Keep them labelled and close at hand so you can use your new home from the first night.
Use our Brisbane moving checklist to plan the wider move, or ask about packing help if preparation is running behind.
These five items disappear during moves more than anything else. A simple system can keep every one of them found.
1. Screws, bolts and furniture hardware
Every dismantled bed, table, desk and wardrobe creates a small group of important parts. Without them, reassembly stops.
Use one zip-lock bag per item. Label it clearly, for example:
Main bedroom bed, 8 bolts, 4 washers, 1 Allen key
Seal the bag and tape it to a safe part of the furniture. Do not put every hardware bag into one unlabelled carton. If attaching the bag could damage the finish, keep all hardware in one rigid container and maintain a written list.
Photograph the item before and during dismantling.
2. Remote controls
Television, air conditioner, garage door, ceiling fan and soundbar remotes live on surfaces that are packed late and quickly.
Create one small “controls” box. Walk through every room on moving morning and collect every remote. Label them if several look alike.
Keep garage and building-access remotes with the keys you need during the move, not inside the truck.
3. Chargers and cables
The missing cable is often the one with an unusual connector that is difficult to replace.
Before disconnecting electronics:
- photograph the back of the device
- label both ends of each cable
- bundle cables by device
- place adapters and small accessories in the same bag
- list expensive items if you are using storage or interstate transport
Keep phone and laptop chargers in your personal moving-day bag.
4. Keys, fobs and access cards
Collect:
- house keys
- window and screen keys
- letterbox keys
- gate and shed keys
- apartment fobs
- garage remotes
- spare keys held in drawers
Place them in labelled pouches for the old and new addresses. Carry the pouches yourself. Photograph the keys and fobs you return to the agent or owner.
5. Important documents
Passports, birth certificates, leases, settlement documents, medical records and insurance papers do not always vanish. More often, they are packed in a carton you cannot reach.
Create one document folder that never goes in the moving truck. Carry:
- identification and passports
- tenancy or settlement documents
- insurance information
- medication and prescriptions
- removalist contact details
- keys and access instructions
- essential work or school records
Keep jewellery, cash and irreplaceable personal items with you as well.
Pack an Open First box
The Open First box should be loaded last so it can be unloaded first.
Include:
- kettle, mugs, tea or coffee
- toilet paper and hand soap
- chargers and a power board
- scissors and a box cutter
- basic tools
- cleaning cloths and bin bags
- paper towel
- medication
- pet or child essentials
- one torch
Write OPEN FIRST on multiple sides and tell the moving crew where you want it.
Use three clearly separated groups
The simplest system is:
- Travels with you: documents, keys, medication, valuables and personal electronics.
- Open First box: immediate household items.
- Moving truck: everything else, labelled by destination room.
That division prevents most moving-day searches.
